In 1993, the Selma Area Food Bank opened its doors with the primary goal of feeding every neighbor in need. To this day the operation strives to put an end to hunger in their 4-county service area in Alabama. They assist over 70,000 people each year. "What better job can you have than to be here to serve others and meet their basic needs," Jeff Harrison, Director of the Selma Area Food Bank.
With the $2,000 they raise through this campaign, they plan to purchase food for the Mobile Pantry Program which covers Dallas, Marengo, Perry and Wilcox counties. The Mobile Pantry Program is designed to drop mass quantities of food to impact communities in their service area. On a bi-weekly to monthly basis, the Selma Area Food Bank partners with a local agency location where they drop the food off and distribute to all the residents in need in the area. Since the pandemic has started, the food bank has gone from 4-5 pantries a month to 11-15 pantries a month. They serve approximately 150-300 families per mobile food pantry.
