The Story

In Hiawassee, Georgia, Towns County Schools has an annual event called “Shop with a Hero.” This is an annual Christmas shopping event where first responders (typically law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS and others) take children Christmas shopping. “Our Shop with a Hero program has been offering its services to our community for over 10 years thanks to the support of our community and our first responders. It began with a few police officers accompanying a few children on a shopping trip at Christmas time and has grown, both in students and first responder participants, and is supported by agencies from surrounding counties. Even though children are encouraged to purchase gifts for themselves, they always put others first and purchase gifts for their loved ones. The Shop with a Hero program builds positive relationships between our first responders and the students in our community and gives these students and their families the opportunity to have a better Christmas,” Paul Smith Chief of Police Hiawassee Police Department.

With the $10,000 they hope to raise, each child receives $200 to spend during the “Shop with a Hero” event. Their goal is to take over 40 children shopping each year, plus enjoy a pizza party afterwards. This program provides underprivileged student in Hiawassee a sense of support and builds a bond between each student and their community responders. Donate now to help a student feel a sense of accomplishment that they are able to provide their loved ones with a Christmas gift.
