West Elementary School’s mission is to empower today’s students for tomorrow’s challenges. One of the many ways teachers, staff and administrators are able to enhance this mission is by promoting health and wellness. Through physical education (PE) classes, recess and even outdoor lessons, students are able to enjoy time in the great outdoors. However, the current soccer field area they use frequently has standing water and is very rocky.
In partnership with WoodmenLife Chapter 15 in Batesville, AR, West Elementary School hopes to raise $15,000 through WoodmenLife Impact to construct a 5,000 square feet turf soccer field on their existing playground. “Installing the turf will allow our students to go outside for recess on days when the ground may still be wet. It will also give PE classes the opportunity to have outside class on good weather days,” said Principal Sonya Gaither. With 585 students enrolled and various sports teams and community members utilizing the playground seven days a week, this campaign will not only impact West Elementary School, but also the Batesville community as a whole.
